SigmaChain has announced that it will acquire Cyworld and proceed with the restoration of previously suspended data, followed by a phased relaunch of the service.
On February 2, Jin-Young Kwak, CEO of SigmaChain, stated that upon completion of the acquisition, the company will restore all Cyworld data and 추진 new services based on a Web 3.0 architecture. SigmaChain plans to finalize the acquisition in March, after which data recovery efforts and a step-by-step service relaunch will begin.
Kwak was involved in Cyworld at its founding stage as a database administrator (DBA), where he led the design of the service architecture and data structure. He explained that prior to the acquisition, he personally visited data centers multiple times to assess the feasibility of data restoration. While some data has been fragmented, he noted that restoration is achievable with the cooperation of the original system architects.
SigmaChain is a blockchain-focused technology company that operates its own mainnet. Leveraging this infrastructure, the company plans to build a fair revenue-sharing model in a Web 3.0 environment, enabling content creators, users, and the platform operator to share value equitably. Cyworld’s strong brand recognition and large user base will be utilized as a platform to accelerate mainstream adoption of Web 3.0 services.
Cyworld will retain the emotional essence of its classic minihompy experience and its private, “ilchon” (close-friend) based social structure, while transitioning its technical foundation to blockchain technology. This shift is intended to enhance transparency in revenue distribution and to automate content transaction records and settlement processes.
SigmaChain will introduce a “2-4-4 model,” under which revenue generated from content sales is distributed as follows: 20% to the company, 40% to users, and 40% to content creators. All transactions and distributions will be recorded on the blockchain, enabling automatic settlement at the moment revenue is generated.
Cyworld’s former virtual currency, “Dotori,” will also be redesigned on a blockchain basis. Dotori will be linked to a stablecoin and used as both a payment and reward mechanism within the platform.
The service relaunch will take place in two stages: a beta phase and a full launch. During the beta phase, users will be able to verify recovered data and access basic minihompy functions. After the official launch, features such as Dotori integration, a marketplace, and an advertising reward system will be introduced sequentially. In the long term, SigmaChain plans to pursue global expansion by combining Cyworld with K-culture, with Southeast Asia identified as the primary target market.
“As a founding member, I feel a deep sense of responsibility toward users who have waited for Cyworld,” Kwak said. “Through data restoration and fair value distribution, we aim to build a new internet service model where creators and users receive the recognition and rewards they deserve.”
