In this \u2018Learning the Block Chain\u2019 series,\r\nI will briefly explain the core terminology and technology of the blockchain\r\ntechnology to those that do not possess expert knowledge regarding IT or\r\ninvestment. <\/div>

Today, I will explain one of the core concepts of blockchain:\r\nconsensus mechanisms.<\/o><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

 <\/o><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The main advantage of blockchain technology\r\nis that it uses a decentralized system to ensure security and integrity. What\r\nmakes this possible is the various consensus mechanisms. In a nutshell, a\r\ndecentralized blockchain network requires a set of algorithms to verify the\r\ninput data before it is processed. <\/span><\/p>

The validity of the transactions is\r\nestablished when a set of different nodes in the decentralized network come up\r\nwith a consensus. A centralized network does not need to have a different\r\nconsensus system because all decisions go through the entire system. <\/span><\/p>

However, a\r\ndecentralized system requires a separate consensus algorithm because no single\r\nentity has the authority to process a transaction; it only occurs when a set of\r\nnodes agree that the generated blocks are valid. Since there are multiple\r\nlayers of verification, it is optimized to prevent corruption and attacks by\r\nhackers. <\/span><\/p>

Moreover, even if it gets attacked, as long as over 51% of the nodes\r\nmeet a consensus, the transaction would be valid.<\/o><\/span><\/p>

<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

There are many types of consensus systems\r\nthat could be used for blockchain technology. <\/span><\/p>

The first type is Proof of Work\r\n(PoW). Some of the cryptocurrencies using this method are Bitcoin (BTC) and\r\nEtherium (ETH). The Proof of Work method is the earliest mechanism to meet a\r\nconsensus. It requires the process of mining, a concept which is widely known\r\nto even non-experts in the blockchain industry. <\/span><\/p>

Within Proof of Work, mining is\r\na way to find solutions to blocks by conducting numerous hashing attempts. In short,\r\nit is the process of plugging in arbitrary values to the block until a solution\r\nis found. Since it is plugging in values, the miners with more computing power\r\nwill have a better chance of creating and processing a block. Each time this\r\nhappens, a miner would receive a coin as compensation for its computing power. <\/span><\/p>

That\u2019s why many miners are trying to speed up operations and setting up many\r\ncomputers. The more they compute, the more coin they receive. <\/span><\/p>

In terms of\r\nsecurity, it is the safest but is a significantly slower, and\r\nresource-intensive method for block-chain technologies that are new, compared\r\nto other consensus systems. <\/span><\/p>

For example, for the case of Etherium, the\r\ntransaction per second (TPS) is only 25 and for the case of Bitcoin, it is only\r\n6, which is even lower.<\/o><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n


<\/span><\/p>

The second type is the Proof of Stake\r\n(PoS), which can be considered as an upgraded version of Proof of Work. <\/span><\/p>

The\r\nfatal disadvantage of the existing proof-of-work method was speed. The miners\r\nwere mining based on their computing power and everyone had equal authority and\r\npower in verifying the transactions. <\/span><\/p>

However, the method of Proof of Stake\r\ndetermines how much of the transaction will be verified by each node based on\r\nthe amount of coin it holds and the period of time it has been held for. <\/span><\/p>

Rather\r\nthan requiring a computation, it is much faster because you have the right to\r\nverify based on your equity. In this system, if a hacker was trying to attack a\r\nnode, the hacker should have control over 51% of the whole coin network. <\/span><\/p>

Moreover, there is also very little reason to threaten the existing ecosystem\r\nbecause the more equity one has in the network, the more they are dependent on\r\nthe stableness of the network. A typical coin that uses this is Peer Coin\r\n(PPC).<\/o><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n


<\/span><\/p>

The third type is the Delegated Proof of\r\nStake (DPOS), which is a modification of the Proof of Stake mechanism. This\r\ntechnology makes the existing method of Proof of Stake even faster. <\/span><\/p>

Instead of\r\nallowing everyone in the system to participate in the direct verification\r\nprocess, it allows them to vote on the representative nodes. In this case, if\r\nthe representative nodes meet a consensus, it speaks for everyone in the\r\nsystem. Those who have more stakes can get more power when voting. <\/span><\/p>

Choosing the\r\nnumber of representative nodes can be decided by the company or individual who\r\ndeveloped the main net. While less representative nodes can provide a faster\r\ntransaction speed, as it requires less number of verifications, it is\r\nrecommended to keep a certain number of nodes to make it difficult for 51%\r\npercent of the nodes to be polluted. EOS claims that 21 representative nodes\r\nare the most balanced number of safety and speed.<\/o><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n


<\/span><\/p>

The next technology is newly developed by a\r\nblockchain company and is patented, unique, fast and safe. It is the Dual\r\nDelegated Proof of Stake (DDPoS) of the Sigma Chain (PIA). <\/span><\/p>

This new consensus\r\nmechanism was able to speed up the Proof of Stake method, which is currently in\r\nuse by many blockchain companies while improving its security. Setting up 21\r\nrepresentative nodes is the same as DPoS, but it has added a new security step\r\nto it. <\/span><\/p>

A total of 17 nodes are determined by voting for those who have a stake\r\nin the same way as before. However, four nodes are randomly designated and are\r\ncalled \u201csigma nodes\u201d. <\/span><\/p>

At random times, these sigma nodes are changed and a new\r\ncombination of representative nodes are determined. The advantage of this is\r\nthat 51% of the nodes are very unlikely to be attacked and contaminated. The\r\nexisting Proof of Stake method is likely to have its representative nodes\r\nexposed. <\/span><\/p>

In this case, over half of the nodes are attacked, there will be a\r\nhuge problem. However, the double-delegated equity stakeholder approach in\r\nsigma chain is much safer on the security side because even if the 17\r\ndesignated nodes are exposed, the four nodes change at random. <\/span><\/p>

A lot more than\r\nhalf of the designated nodes have to be contaminated so the probability is\r\nlower. Speed \u200b\u200bis also very fast compared to existing blockchain technologies. <\/span><\/p>

Sigma chain is certified to be capable of 300,000 TPS (number of transactions\r\nper second). For the case of bitcoin, it has TPS of 6 or less, and even EOS,\r\nwhich is considered to be fast, is staying at 4,000 TPS. This fast mechanism is\r\nadvantageous in that the mainnet can accommodate more users and have more partners.<\/o><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

For Kwak Jin-young, founder and CEO of\nblockchain company Sigmachain, creating a globally successful service has\nalways been his dream. He led the team that designed Cyworld, which was popular\nin South Korea before the era of Facebook and Kakao Talk. <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>\u201cCyworld and Kakao all failed to become a\nglobal service, but blockchain has brought us a new opportunity,\u201d Kwak said in\na recent interview with The Investor, adding that while it is almost impossible\nto create entirely new services, like Cyworld or Facebook did, it is possible\nto create better versions.


<\/p>He said his company is betting on\nblockchain technology to come up with better social networking services.\nSigmachain recently launched a beta version of SNAC, the first-ever Dapp based\non its main net Futurepia, in the hope of becoming one of the first platforms\nto successfully commercialize blockchain technologies.


<\/p>The following are excerpts from the\ninterview.


<\/p>TI: Please introduce Sigmachain and your\nteam. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>

Kwak: Sigmachain is a blockchain company\nthat develops blockchain main nets. We started to develop blockchain\ntechnologies in 2015 and launched our main-net called Futurepia in 2017. We do\nother IT businesses to make a profit and invest this in our blockchain\ntechnologies. <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>Recently we launched the beta version of\nDapp SNAC, a reward-sharing social media platform. It\u2019s like Kakao Messenger\nbut based on blockchain technologies. On our platform users get rewards for\ntheir content. People will get more rewards for their content compared with the\ncompensation they get from YouTube, for instance.


<\/p>Our research team consists of 25 people and\nis based in Daegu. There\u2019s an operation and sales team in Seoul made up of 15\nmore employees. I was originally looking for good talent in Daegu, which is my\nhometown. When Samsung Electronics moved to Suwon, some excellent engineers who\nwere involved with Samsung\u2019s distribution networking technologies used for its\nmobile phones stayed in Daegu. At the time, we didn\u2019t even know what we were\ndoing was very close to blockchain. <\/span><\/span>

 <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>TI: Why SNS? <\/span>

Kwak: I have been involved with SNS for a\nlong time. I designed Cyworld and served as CTO of Say Cupid, a dating SNS\nlater sold to game developer Neowiz in the early 2000s. Later I founded Touch,\nwhich develops distributed network technology. <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>And SNS based on blockchain benefits users\nin terms of evaluation and compensation. If you upload on a centralized\nplatform, it is inevitable that you\u2019re under the control of those platforms.\nBut on decentralized SNS like SNAC, You can track down the original creator and\nhistory of alterations. So original creators can claim bigger benefits. This\nwill improve the quality of the content.


<\/p>On top of that, I have always wanted to\ncreate a globally successful SNS. All Korean SNS have failed to achieve global\nsuccess. There are a lot of barriers for Korean companies in becoming a global\nplayer but I think blockchain gives us this opportunity. And so far it has been\npromising as two-thirds of users signed up for SNAC are from overseas. <\/span><\/span>

 <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>TI: How do you compare yourself with\ncompetitors? <\/span>

Kwak: I think many companies describe good\ntechnologies in their white papers but we rarely see them commercialized. Our\ngoal is to commercialize blockchain technologies faster than anyone else.\nBecause at the end of the day, it all comes down to who can materialize first\nand scale up. Look at Vitalik Buterin (the founder of Ethereum). He lacks\nexperience in operating real services. This makes it difficult to create an ecosystem\nthat actually works. That\u2019s why you only see cryptocurrencies and money\ntransfers as blockchain services. I think Steamit, which is a blockchain-based\nblogging and social media website, may be the only service that works. <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>Part of the reason we haven\u2019t seen much of\nblockchain usage is speed. Bitcoin and Ethereum can handle five and seven\ntransactions per second, respectively. This is too slow. We\u2019ve achieved 300,000\ntransactions per seconds. This compares with Facebook, which can handle 30,000\nto 40,000 transactions per second. We are proud of the speed, which is\ncertified by Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme, the governmental\naccreditation body. <\/span>

 <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>TI: 2018 was a bumpy year for blockchain\nand cryptocurrencies. How do you assess the blockchain industry now? <\/span>

Kwak: In the past two years, most people\nwere only interested in cryptocurrencies. There are many companies good at\nmarketing. Some raise funding through ICOs and disappear. I see this trend\nchanging this year. And I believe only those with competitive technologies can\nsurvive, while scammers and companies that have no technologies will fail. <\/span><\/p>

 <\/span><\/p>


<\/p>TI: What are your future goals? <\/span>

Kwak: We want to become one of the top 10\nmarket cap companies with our coin SNAK, and host killer DAPPs to make\nFuturepia an active blockchain main net offering all the advantages of\nblockchain technologies. We are planning to list SNAC on cryptocurrency exchanges\nsoon. In the past, people just invested after reading a white paper but these\ndays, investors are interested in seeing real technologies. I hope investors\nvet more thoroughly. <\/span><\/p>
